FORT LAUDERDALE —The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Academic Competition will take place on Saturday, May 19, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Stranahan High School, 1800 S.W. Fifth Pl., Fort Lauderdale.

Students will compete in a variety of events such as Impromptu Speaking, Declamation, Original Oratory, Talent, Art and Writing.

Middle school students will also participate in a Spelling Bee competition.

Nearly 300 middle and high school English Language Learners (ELLs) have pre-registered for the event. This year’s theme is Within Our Differences are Our Strengths. All students will be awarded ribbons to recognize their talents and efforts. Students with the highest score in each category will receive either a medal or a trophy.

The competition leads students to a better understanding of the curriculum and the cultures of people throughout the United States and the world. It offers diverse alternatives for linguistic opportunities and cultural events that develop skills such as cooperation, organization, research, problem-solving, originality and creativity.
