MIAMI — South Florida’s first National Brotherhood of Skiers affiliate, the Sunshine Slopers, is poised to kick off the 2011-2012 season with the election of new officers and the addition of new members.
Lawanda Joseph was recently elected president of the chapter. Other officers are Beverly Laners, vice president; Allen Jones, secretary; Howard Dupree, treasurer; and Darlene Gay, corresponding secretary. The club currently boasts a membership of 200, who include singles, couples and youth.
Although some members are not skiers, many are in the club for the social events and international travel.
“The group plans a number of ski and non-ski related trips,” said Joseph. “The benefits of joining a ski club include social activities, in addition to group rates on ski trips each winter. Sunshine Slopers also enjoys a year-round schedule of activities, including parties, picnics, social outings and more.”
Club officers say if you’ve thought about taking to the slopes this winter, or whether you've been gliding on fresh powder for years or whether you’ve never even seen snow, the Sunshine Slopers Ski Club has a place for you.
The club meets at 3 p.m. the third Sunday of the month at the Betty Ferguson Community Center, 3000 NW 199th St., Miami Gardens.
