Legacy breakfast: There will be an annual breakfast commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The keynote speaker will be Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College for Women. The breakfast will take place on Friday, Jan. 16 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at Graham University Center Ballroom at Florida International University’s FIU-University Park, 11200 SW 8th Street, Miami. Free at last: Free at Last: Civil Rights Heroes, a film previewing some of the martyrs of the Civil Rights era, including Medgar Evers, Jimmie Lee Jackson, Emmett Till, Vernon Dahmer, plus highlights from the March on Washington, will air at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Broward County Library, Hollywood branch, at 2600 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood. Hands on: Hands on Miami will hold a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in which participants will paint the homes of senior citizens at a public housing facility in Liberty City, and landscape the grounds. The event will take place Saturday, Jan. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Liberty City Square Community Center, 6304 NW 14th Avenue, Miami. The event is free and open to the public. Step showcase: The MLK Teen Rally & Step Showcase, hosted by the Dr. King Celebration Committee and the Broward County YMCA, will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Rev. MLK Fitness run: A Martin Luther King Jr. 5k Run/Fitness Walk around Liberty City will take place at the Martin Luther King Jr. Metrorail Station, Northwest 62nd Street and Northwest 27th Avenue in Liberty City, beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, when Martin Luther King Day is officially recognized. King celebration: “Unity in the Community,” a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, will take place Monday Jan. 19 from noon to 6 p.m. Children’s interactive activities, celebrity and local performances, stage performances, a poetry contest, an oratorical contest, a break-out artist contest, and food will be available. Hallandale MLK parade: A Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade will take place in Hallandale Beach beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19. The parade route will begin at B.F. James Park, NW 2nd Avenue and 9th Street , and proceed to Hallandale Beach Blvd., to Northwest 8th Ave and, finally, to O.B. Johnson Park at 900 NW Eighth Avenue, also known as Foster Road. This year, there will be a viewing area for entertainment at Northwest Eighth Avenue and Second Street. The event is free and open to the public. Breakfast celebration: “Change and Continuity: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy and the Age of Barack Obama” will be a breakfast event featuring keynote speaker Dr. Derrick E. White. The event, sponsored by the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum and Old School Square Cultural Arts Center in Delray Beach, will take place at the Delray Beach Golf Club, 2200 Highland Avenue, Delray Beach, at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19.
