Broward County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion withstood several challengers to retain his seat in District 9, and County Commissioner John Rodstrom narrowly held onto his seat in District 7 after the results of Tuesday’s primary were totaled.

Rodstrom’s toughest competitor was Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Carlton Moore. After 100 percent of the precincts were counted, Rodstrom had received a mere 145 more votes than the veteran city commissioner.

Eggellettion was re-elected with 52 percent of the vote, outpacing his closest competitor, Allen B. Jackson, who garnered 18.21 percent.

Rodstrom said it would be difficult to be re-elected in a district that includes so many diverse populations. He was challenged by Davie Town Councilman Bryan Caletka, who received 1,848 votes and general contractor Robert McKinzie, who ended up with 2,001 votes.

“I knew when I redrew the boundaries of the district that it would be difficult to be re-elected, but I did that on purpose. There are things that I want to accomplish in the black community in my district,” Rodstrom said.

Rodstrom offered his efforts to revitalize the 27th avenue corridor as part of a long term plan to invigorate the neighborhoods and retail areas surrounding the African-American Research Library.

“William Dandy took me and drove me around 27th avenue and said, ‘We need to fix this,’” Rodstrom said. He refers to that moment as the beginning of his efforts to revitalize the area.

“I’m not a politician. I love public service, and I feel comfortable with what I will leave behind. I will continue to represent the people of my district.”

Eggelletion earned 6,127  of the 11,759 votes cast. Allen Jackson of Pompano finished a distant second, narrowly leading Lauderhill City Commissioner Dale Holness and Lauderdale Lakes City Commissioner John Billingsly Jr.

Eggelletion said that voters chose him because of his agenda and track record. Jackson has been a vocal opponent of Eggelletion, but was not able to make enough of an impact to negate the incumbent’s resume.
