van-dykes_web.jpgBlack music is a timeless treasure that is even more spectacular when experienced live. In honor of Black Music Month, we are shining the spotlight on a few South Florida venues that offer real time enjoyment of soulful singers, jazzy bands and a rhythmic vibe.

B Bar inside The Besty Hotel
1440 Ocean Drive, • Miami Beach, FL 33139
P 305.531.6100 | www.thebetsyhotel.com
Voted “Best New Hotel Lounge” by the Miami New Times last year, the B BAR offers a sophisticated, speak-easy vibe, bartenders rumored to be the best in town, and a variety of great live music. To top that, there is never a cover or drink minimum. You are in for a treat when jazz and soul diva Maryel Epps takes the stage on Thursday, June 9.

Blue Martini West Palm Beach
477 S. Rosemary Ave, Suite 309 • West Palm Beach, FL 33401
561-820-8071 | www.bluemartinilounge.com
If you’re OK with smoke-filled rooms, the Blue Martini offers several locations throughout the tri-county area, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The popular spot also has clubs in Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa and Naples. Check out the jazzy, soulful sounds of Valerie Tyson at the WPB location on June 11.

Crescendos Jazz and Blues Lounge
2201 Biscayne Blvd. • Miami, FL 33137
305-967-8176 | www.crescendojazzandblues.com
One of the newest live music venues in South Florida, Crescendo’s has been hampered by what seems to be non-stop construction on Biscayne Boulevard. However, true music lovers should not let the road work stop them because the atmosphere, energy and music are worth the effort. Contact the club to find out its live performance schedule.

MANGOS
904 East Las Olas Blvd. • Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301
954.523.5001 | www.mangosonlasolas.com
In addition to being a pretty decent restaurant, Mangos also offers live music several nights each week. Thursday nights’ regular band is Eclipse, an abbreviated version of South Florida R & B favorite, Final Countdown. Founder and lead singer Michael Whitehead creates a nice mix of old and new school sounds that keeps the small dance floor packed.

The Van Dyke
846 Lincoln Rd. •  Miami Beach
305-534-3600 | www.thevandykecafe.com
The Van Dyke offers a diverse selection of music, including soul, R & B and jazz. Catch Bobby Stringer on June 11. The Novell Nu Soul Music Series kicks off on June 14 and will feature South Florida’s best R & B, soul and funk vocalists through June 16.
