Football fundamentals, proper technique, drills, safety and character development taught to young athletes and youth coaches

MIAMI — On Sunday, June 14, South Florida youth football players and area youth football league coaches and representatives participated in the Orange Bowl Youth Football Alliance Youth and Coaches Clinics. The FIU football coaching staff led both clinics.

In the morning, FIU Head Football Coach Ron Turner, his assistant coaches and student athletes ran participants ages 5-14 through offensive, defensive and agility drills, proper techniques to promote on-field football safety and talked about the importance of character development and good sportsmanship.

In the afternoon, Youth football league coaches and representatives received education and instruction on practice drills, coaching strategies, precautions and safety measures from Coach Turner and his assistant coaches. Additionally, Heads up Football components, equipment fitting, concussion recognition and response, and on-field instruction was provided by USA Football Master Trainers, including Chris Merritt, head coach at Miami Columbus High School.

Entering its 17h season, the Orange Bowl Youth Football Alliance presented by Sports Authority has over 16,000 youth participants, playing in ten leagues spread out across South Florida, from north of Lake Okeechobee to Key West.
