MIAMI — Legendary artist Purvis Young decorated Miami’s landscape for decades. Later this year, The Lyric Theatre pays tribute to the Overtown native with an exhibit in his honor.
Young died 2010 at age 67. But his artwork lives on with thousands of fans around the world.
The December exhibit is one of the highlights at Lyric, 819 NW Second Avenue in Overtown. Here is a sampling of other offerings:
Lyric Live
Last Show for this season – Sunday, Oct. 5. Hosted by local comedian Chello, Lyric Live is presented on the first Friday of every month at The Historic Lyric Theatre in Overtown. The program includes live music by Jody Hill & Deep Fried Funk and local DJs Proof and K-Chin, happy hour and concessions. Show contestants share their talents on stage and are either greeted with applause or “boos” from the audience, in a format similar to the famed Apollo amateur night in Harlem. Mix & mingle happy hour in the Lyric Lobby at 6 p.m.; showtime is at 8.
Lyric Live All-stars — Nov. 7. The season of Lyric Live concludes with a special Lyric Live All-stars Edition featuring the season’s winners competing for the grand prize. Happy hour is 6 p.m.; show starts at 8.
Purvis Young — Dec. 4. A Man Among the Peoples: The Life, Art and Legacy of Purvis Young opens at The Lyric Theatre Cultural Arts Complex. This is a salon-style exhibition that celebrates the life and legacy of Overtown Artist, Purvis Young. This exhibition will coincide with two other exhibitions that will be housed at The Historic Dorsey House and The Ward Rooming House.
Expressions
The spoken word and live jazz showcase is back a second year in April. Expressions will feature high-profile and up and coming poets and jazz musicians from South Florida and beyond.
South Florida Marching Band Precision Camp – July 21 – 28
During this one-week period, band camp students will participate in daily rehearsals at The Historic Lyric Theatre facilities and Gibson Park in Overtown. At the culmination of the program, band campers will showcase their talents at two free public events, a symphonic and ensemble concert and a marching band performance.
