Miramar – Keith "Papa Keith" Walcott, a noted media figure, community advocate, and visionary behind initiatives such as the People Matter Fest and the 24-Hour Ceasefire Campaign, has officially declared his candidacy for Miramar city commissioner.
"Miramar is a vibrant city with incredible potential," said Walcott. "As commissioner, I will prioritize safety, equity, and opportunity for all residents, ensuring that our city thrives for generations to come."
Walcott’s said his candidacy is grounded in his lifelong commitment to creating safer, stronger communities. As the founder of Papa Keith 4 People Matter (PK4PM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing gun violence and fostering positive opportunities for youth, Walcott has spearheaded transformative initiatives.
One of his most notable achievements is the 24-Hour Ceasefire Campaign, a bold call for Miami-Dade County residents to pause gun violence for a day. This campaign is coupled with his People Matter Fest – a free, family-friendly hip-hop festival that unites the community through music, art, and advocacy. These efforts have garnered widespread acclaim, empowering residents to reclaim their neighborhoods and embrace a culture of peace.
Walcott said his platform focuses on addressing key challenges facing Miramar, including:
1. Enhancing Public Safety: Building on the success of his 24-Hour Ceasefire Campaign, Walcott said he plans to implement innovative strategies to combat rising crime, foster policecommunity relationships, and provide preventive resources for at-risk youth.
2. Empowering Youth: As a mentor and advocate, he said he aims to expand access to parks, recreational programs, and career training, ensuring young residents have the tools they need to succeed.
3. Supporting Small Businesses: Walcott said he recognizes the vital role of entrepreneurs, and is committed to reducing bureaucratic barriers and fostering a thriving local economy.
4. Advancing Affordable Living: Walcott said he will champion initiatives to make housing, childcare, and senior services more accessible, ensuring Miramar remains a welcoming city for all.
5. Sustainable Growth: He said he envisions a future where Miramar’s infrastructure, environment, and development are thoughtfully planned to benefit current and future generations.
Through his People Matter Fest and 24-Hour Ceasefire Campaign, Walcott has demonstrated an ability to mobilize communities and inspire action. Supported by leaders such as MiamiDade County Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert III, the events have become cornerstones of advocacy, uniting residents to promote peace and resilience, he said.
"In a world often divided, unity is our greatest strength," Walcott said. "As commissioner, I will ensure that every voice is heard and every resident feels valued."
