OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – When the public dedication and co-designation ceremony for Commissioner Barbara Jordan Way took place March 24, more than 100 public officials, representatives of community based organizations, and District 1 residents gathered to join in. They included Miami-Dade County Commission Vice Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert, III, Opa-locka Mayor Matthew Pigatt, Commissioner Joseph L. Kelley, Vice-Mayor Veronica Williams and the Opa-locka City Commission. The portion of NW 37th Avenue from NW 135th Street to NW 151st Street was ceremonially named Commissioner Barbara Jordan Way. Jordan at one point became emotional thanking the guests and reminiscing about her service. She vowed to continue to be a stallworth for her community. Also on the program for the event were Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Florida City Mayor Otis Wallace, former Chief of Staff for Commissioner Jordan Andre Ragin, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department Lester Sola, and Greater Miami Service Corps Board member Lonnie Lawrence.
