WEST PALM BEACH – For any business, particularly an African American business – to survive 90 years “is a blessing,” stellar songstress Terrion Nelson, lower left, said Sunday in singing tribute to the ability of Derrick McCray, lower right, “to sustain, and keep the tradition of his family.” That venerable family legacy was celebrated during the McCray’s Backyard BBQ and Seafood 90th year Anniversary Celebration at The Peach in West Palm Beach. Kenneth Payne, above from left, Ray Nelson, Horace Tompkins, Greg Fashaw and Duane Drisdom were among myriad fellow former professional athletes and well-wishers who continually arrived during a weekend of pride in a family institution known throughout South Florida, and nationally – the upcoming Super Bowl in New Orleans will be McCray’s 19th as a vendor. “I’m really appreciative that we been able to weather the storm for these 90 years,” said McCray, who is opening locations at the foot of Blue Heron Bridge in Riviera Beach and Roseland Drive and Henry Avenue in West Palm Beach, “and my job is to uphold the tradition of the McCrays going into the future.”
