PHOENIX (AP) _ Phoenix officials are cracking down on owners of apartments without proper air conditioning as the weather continues to heat up.

KPHO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1Lv4EhL) that a recent city ordinance mandates that apartment buildings must have AC.

Furthermore, units with air conditioning cannot be hotter than 82 degrees. Units with swamp coolers cannot be above 86 degrees.

Officials say any landlords that fail to abide by those standards will be put on notice. They must either fix the apartment or help their tenants find another place to live.

Assistant City Prosecutor Bob Smith says property owners can face steep fines.

Smith says some landlords were fined $3 million a few years ago when they refused to repair an apartment complex where residents had no air conditioning.
