MIAMI — Continuing a legacy that began in 1940 in Miami, Gamma Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority recently inducted 21 dynamic young ladies as members in the sisterhood.
Under the direction of chapter President Sandra L. Jackson and Membership Chairman Janice Spann-Givens, the 21 ladies underwent a process of learning about the organization and providing community service at a Miami women’s shelter.
The process culminated with their induction on June 10 and a luncheon at the DoubleTree by Hilton, a celebration attended by more than 300 family members, sorority members and friends.
Jackson, president for the 2012-2013 cycle, said the incoming members will enhance the chapter’s mission of providing service throughout the Greater Miami area.
Prior to their induction, the newest members, known as F.O.R.E.V.E.R. 21, conducted a community service project in Overtown at the Lotus House, which houses women affected by drug abuse and domestic violence as well as their children, ages 7 and under. They donated a vanload of clothing to the thrift store and dressed as popular children’s characters such as Dr. Seuss, Princess Jasmine, Dorothy and Pocahontas to read stories to the children.
In addition, hygiene kits and books were given to the women and children. The women of Lotus House joined in line dancing and meditation/relaxation activities.
Jackson noted that the chapter currently is focused on education of children and adults, preventative health care and wellness, voter empowerment, poverty, economic security, and other critical areas.
Several chapter committees continue to work during the summer on projects designed to uplift the community.
