TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ The Florida Highway Patrol says more than 69,000 traffic citations were issued during a monthlong campaign to enforce the law requiring motorists to move over for emergency vehicles.
Of the total, the FHP said Monday that 23,500 citations were for speeding. Troopers also made 620 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. More than 1,200 move-over law citations were issued.
Motorists are required by law to move over one lane or slow to 20 miles an hour below the posted speed limit when approaching emergency vehicles or tow trucks with flashing lights. The law is designed to protect law enforcement and emergency personnel from being struck by cars.
The FHP noted that three troopers have been hit by cars since early January in Florida while working alongside highways.
