The reading project, called “One Book, One New Orleans,'' is in its seventh year and kicks off Wednesday.

Baum's book has been acclaimed by critics and New Orleanians for telling the tale of nine people before and after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on Aug. 29, 2005. The One Book project aims to increase literacy by trying to get people to read the same book at the same time each fall. Other American cities have similar “One Book'' reading initiatives.

The kickoff for the One Book project begins Wednesday at the New Orleans African American Museum.
