tourney_cc_fc_web.jpgThe Miami-Dade Community Action Agency (CAA), in conjunction with the Community Advisory Committees (CAC), hosted its first Hardwood Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament fundraiser recently at the Overtown Youth Center.

CAA staff members Dominique Nixon and Chamarr West organized the competition to raise $500 for the Culmer CAC Scholarship fund.

Participating teams were drawn from South Florida Work Force, the Overtown Youth Center and staff members from the Edison, Perrine, Liberty City and Culmer Community Service Centers.

The contest raised $300. The Liberty City team was the winner.

The Community Advisory Committees award scholarships annually to needy applicants ages 16 to 25 to help them reach their educational goals.

The committees are established through the CAC’s Citizens Participation Unit and its governing board, in keeping with Community Service Block Grant requirements.

Those requirements include creation of a tripartite board to ensure that low-income persons have an opportunity to participate in the policy and decision-making process, planning, program implementation and evaluation of the organization.

The board’s membership is drawn from the public sector, the private sector and low-income communities.

The CAC target areas include Allapattah, Browns-ville, Coconut Grove, Culmer, Edison/Little River, Florida City, Goulds, Hialeah, Liberty City, Little Havana, Naranja, Opa-locka, Perrine, South Beach, South Miami and Wynwood.
