ATHENS, Ohio (AP) _ Ohio University is banning tobacco on campus.

The Athens Messenger (http://bit.ly/1MyqAZU ) reports that Ohio University’s Athens campus is transitioning to tobacco-free starting Saturday, based on a recommendation from the Ohio Board of Regents in 2012.

The policy affects all nicotine, tobacco-derived and other products, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos, hookah-smoked products, and snuff. Everyone on campus must comply, including employees, students and visitors.

University officials say over 1,500 universities are promoting an environment of wellness. A university task force will evaluate the policy’s effectiveness and address any compliance issues that arise.

Free tobacco cessation classes will be available this fall for students and employees. University employee benefits cover up to six months of nicotine replacement therapy for those quitting tobacco.
