ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ Students at Minnesota’s public colleges may have to brace for a tuition bump.
Tuition freezes at the state’s two postsecondary systems got bipartisan support the last time lawmakers set a budget. But legislators’ appetites seem to have waned a bit this year.
Only Gov. Mark Dayton is pushing the $207 million necessary to hold tuition flat at both the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and the University of Minnesota. The House and Senate would partially fund such a move, but they’re prioritizing different systems.
The Republican-controlled House passed a bill 72-55 Monday afternoon that would send $105 million to help MnSCU schools fight rising costs and send no such money to the research university. The DFL-led Senate would spread about $120 million evenly between them.
