MIAMI — A musical play hailed by the Associated Press as “divine,” Sister Act opens at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County on Tuesday for a limited engagement.

Produced by Whoopi Goldberg, Troika Entertainment and Sister Act On Tour, Sister Act received five 2011 Tony-Award nominations including Best Musical, Best Original Score (Alan Menken (music)/Glenn Slater (lyrics), and Best Book Of A Musical (Cheri & Bill Steinkellner and Douglas Carter Beane). Sister Act closes the 2014-2015 Broadway in Miami subscription season.

The national touring company production stars Kerissa Arrington in the role of Deloris, which was popularized by Goldberg in the screen version of the same title. In a review in OnStageblog.com, critic Nancy Sasso Janis wrote:

“The opening night performance shattered the illusion that touring companies can’t possibly be as stellar as the original cast on Broadway. This one had all the glitz and combined talent of what I suspect was evident in NYC. Moreover, Kerissa Arrington is simply stellar in the role of Deloris, the lounge singer who hides out in a convent for her own safety. This young woman, who makes her National Tour debut in the show, has an outstanding singing voice and the stage presence to raise this production to a heavenly level.”

In the storyline, disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, and is put into protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won’t be found — a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior.

Using her fabulous disco-ness and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church, but in doing so, blows her cover. Soon it’s nun-on-the-run time but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood. Based on the mega-hit film, Sister Act features an original Alan Menken/Glenn Slater score with a vast inspiration of musical styles from Motown, soul and funk to great big disco anthems and Barry White-inspired musical comedy.
