Words Not Weapons Poetry Slam 2009: The Palm Beach Association of Black Journalists is taking a stand against youth violence with its second Words Not Weapons Poetry Slam. The slam is open to middle and high school students in Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties. Auditions will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., Oct. 17, at the West Palm Beach Library, 411 Clematis Street. Students should bring at least one poem to read or recite. Free Gospel Sunday:
The Free Gospel Sunday Concert returns to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, 1300 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami. Grammy Award-winning gospel artist Cece Winans will perform with the Free Gospel Sundays Mass Choir and the Miami Gardens-based choir from Cooper Temple Church of God in Christ, which will release a new album, “The Upper Room,” on Oct. 18.
