FORT LAUDERDALE — Child care advocates, the state and other agencies are highlighting the successes of the foster-care system with a new campaign.

ChildNet, which serves Broward and Palm Beach counties, joined the Florida Department of Children & Families recently to launch the “It Can Be Done” campaign in Broward County at Children’s Services Council. Advocates highlighted successes of Florida’s youth in foster care and foster care alumni in pursuing their academic, career and life goals, and thanked those who continue to provide the resources needed to make this possible.

Organizers say the campaign engages local businesses, organizations and communities to empower, develop and encourage foster care youth to achieve their professional goals. Supporters, who have the opportunity to help with everything from mentorships and internships to fostering and adoption, help foster care youth gain self-confidence, share their successes and become marketable in today’s workforce.

“We are so proud of our foster care youth and their ability to come out on top despite having come from circumstances beyond their control and the hardships they have had to face,” said Monica King, ChildNet Broward County executive director. “We all know that it can be done, and we now have a campaign to communicate that to children in foster care. We are grateful to be a part of it.”

One alum, Kevin Love of Deerfield Beach, shared his story. Love is a graduate of Fort Lauderdale High School and now a senior at Florida International University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. With no one to look up to during his childhood, entering foster care in his teenage years, Love decided it was up to him to avoid becoming just a statistic.

“It was my choice to prove anyone wrong who doubted me, and I didn’t want to be sad anymore,” said Love. “For the remainder of high school I got nothing lower than a “B,” and now I’ll be graduating with my bachelor’s degree in the spring. I want to let everyone in foster care, who have had my same doubts, know that ‘it can be done.’ Don’t let anything stand in your way.”
