WEST PARK — Marking the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s address to striking sanitation workers before his assassination, Father Reginald Jean-Mary of the Notre Dame d’Haiti Mission Church and low-wage workers will rally to demand that South Florida anchor institutions honor King’s memory by paying workers livable wages.
The rally is expected to start at 6:30 p.m. April 3 at Mary Saunders Park, 4750 SW 21st St., West Park, a south Broward County community.
“We are expecting hundreds to come out for the rally. We have confirmed that busses of people from all over South Florida will be there, and lots of churches will be joining us,” said organizer Muhammed Malik.
In 1968, King spoke to workers earning roughly $12 per hour, in sharp contrast to airport workers who today, earn as little as $4.91 per hour if working in a tipped position.
Florida Rises, which includes 10 organizations that represent low-wage fast-food, retail, airport and hospitality workers, will join the rally to demand that leaders fight South Florida’s income inequality, which disproportionately hurts black Caribbean immigrants and African-Americans, according to a statement released by organizers on Tuesday.
