LAUDERDALE LAKES — Unifest 2012 is recognizing sponsors that have supported the event — now in its 18th year — with a reception on Friday, May 18, 7-10 p.m. at Pineapple Restaurant, 7529 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Lauderhill.
Unifest 2012 is presented by the Greater Caribbean American Cultural Coalition in association with the City of Lauderdale Lakes and the Greater Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce. The 18th annual event is set for Sunday May 20th, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. at Vincent Torres Park, 4331 N.W. 36th St., Lauderdale Lakes.
This year’s celebration will witness the Diaspora communities joining Jamaica and the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago to commemorate their 50th Year of Independence. Other activities include a business expo, health fair and immigration corner with attorneys from the Caribbean Bar Association, cultural dancers, the Mookie Jumbies Stilt Dancers, face painting, interactive games, story telling and displays of cultural artifacts.
Unifest also offers an array of island food, and arts and craft vendors. The outdoor festival will conclude with a concert under the stars featuring reggae Super Star Luciano and many more, hosted by comedian/actor Owen “Blakka” Ellis from Jamaica.
The organizers note that with their partners’ support, Unifest has grown from a small community event to one that attracts local, regional, national and worldwide attendees and is recognized as a tourist destination event.
The “Sponsors’ Appreciation and Media & Artist Meet and Greet Reception” is expected to say thanks Caribbean style, as guests enjoy a sample of the cuisine and cultural entertainment indicative of the creative vibrancy in the Caribbean American community.
