The Trayvon Martin Foundation, in collaboration with Hanan’s Academic Development Center and Community Builders, hosted a “Back to School Extravaganza” in Opa-locka on Friday. Trayvon’s parents Tracy Martin, left, and Sybrina Fulton helped distribute book bags and school supplies to the first 200 qualified students who turned up.
They set up the foundation to create awareness of how violent crime impacts the families of the victims and to provide support and advocacy for those families in response to the fatal shooting of their son in Sanford on Feb. 26, 2012. The shooter, George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder charges in his killing.
