Therese Homer, chief of Public Safety for Miami Dade College, was elected president of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Law Enforcement Executives and Administrators Inc. at the group’s recent national conference held in Baltimore, Md.


Homer became the organization’s fifth president since its founding in 1999 and the first woman to hold the post.  She served for two years as vice president.

She served as conference chairwoman when the group held its 10th annual national conference in Miami in 2009. During the meeting, it awarded scholarships to African American Criminal Justice students attending Miami Dade College and Florida Memorial University.

A certified law enforcement officer with more than 30 years of  experience, Homer worked in law enforcement for several municipalities prior to the MDC job, including Atlanta, the town of Palm Beach and  Opa-locka police departments. 

A domestic violence expert, she has served as chairwoman of the Miami-Dade County Domestic Violence Oversight Board for two terms, the last as chairwoman of the Governor’s Task Force on Domestic Violence which was responsible for introducing legislation that influenced Florida statutes on domestic violence at the state level. 

Her community involvement includes being a member of the International Rotary Club, the Universal Truth Center for Better Living, the Rotary Club of
Opa-locka and Delta Sigma Theta  Sorority, Miami Alumnae Chapter.

She is also an adjunct professor in Criminal Justice and often speaks on domestic violence and personal safety.
