FORT LAUDERDALE – Sheriff Scott Israel has announced a workshop will be held for non-profit organizations seeking to apply for funding from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF).
Under the "Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act" state statute, the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) has funds available for distribution within the Broward County community.
The statute was established to allow law enforcement agencies to seize and forfeit any contraband that have been used in the commissions of felonies. This includes vehicles, boats, aircraft, cash or any other items of value. The cash or proceeds from a sale of the seized items go into the Law Enforcement Trust Fund account for use by the law enforcement agency.
Under the law, county commissioners are responsible for holding the funds in the trust until they are used, but the statute also allows a law enforcement agency to use them for community purposes.
Among other things, the workshop will inform groups of the qualifying rules and provide assistance with the application process.
It will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 PM at the Broward County African-American Research Library & Cultural Center, which is located at 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.
It is free and open to the public.
Staff will be on hand, with applications, to answer any questions from interested organizations. BSO will accept applications during the months of November and December for Fiscal Year 2013 -2014 funding from the LETF.
It is anticipated that county commissioners will approve LEFT funding during the second quarter of 2014.
A press release issued about the workshop states, "Sheriff Israel and all of the men and woman of the Broward Sheriff’s Office look forward to the opportunity to assist organizations with funding to help them be even more successful in serving the needs of our community."
