Members of the North Broward County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, took senior citizens back to school on Oct. 21 to learn ABCs. But the focus was not on the alphabet but on breast cancer and constitutional amendments.
Nearly 100 seniors and staff at the Federated Women’ Club Senior Center in Fort Lauderdale gathered in the auditorium for the hands-on, interactive presentations.
Link member Charlyne Monroe gave a spirited pep talk on early detection and successful treatment of breast cancer aimed at both men and women and her success as a survivor. Attendees were shown how to examine their breasts and also how to find lumps using breast models.
State Sen. Chris Smith, D-District 29, explained the amendments on the Nov. 2 ballot and stressed the importance of voting in the mid-term election. He also sought input on matters important to the seniors and their communities. He said they could get in touch with him through his “It Ought to Be A Law” project.
The forum ended with Links members giving each senior a gift bag containing cancer and voting awareness information, fruit and snacks.
The event was sponsored by the North Broward Links National Trends and Services Committee chaired by Margaret Roseburr and Dorothy Ruffin. The committee has an ongoing project focusing on providing information and services to senior citizens.
The North Broward County Chapter of The Links was chartered in 1995. The group has won the Innovative Service Award from the national organization and the Outstanding Community Service Award from the city of Coral Springs.
The Links is an international not-for-profit corporation established in 1946 that now has 12,000 committed, accomplished influential decision makers and talented women who are individual achievers and leaders in their fields and have made a difference in their communities and the world.
