PENSACOLA (AP) _ A white Pensacola-area middle school teacher has issued a public apology for using a racial slur in an e-mail complaining about a black custodian's work.

In the e-mail to an assistant principal, teacher Jennifer Dickens, 46, referred to the custodian as “the N'' and “Miss Maid.''

A spokesman for the Escambia County School District says Dickens was disciplined for the March 12 e-mail, but would not specify how she was disciplined.

Dickens has sent another e-mail to the local newspaper issuing a public apology and saying she made “an inexcusable and stupid mistake.''
