University of Southern California made a winning start, beating Hawaii 49-10. Marqise Lee caught a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage and returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score.

Alabama's retooled defense showed it could still dominate as the Crimson Tide began its season with a 41-14 win over Michigan. A.J. McCarron threw two touchdown passes.

Louisiana State had an easy 41-14 victory over North Texas, with Kenny Hilliard rushing for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

Florida State trio Lonnie Pryor, James Wilder Jr., and Debrale Smiley combined for seven rushing touchdowns to lead the Seminoles over Murray State 69-3.

Arkansas defeated Jacksonville State 49-24, with quarterback Tyler Wilson setting the school record for yards passing in a season opener. He finished 19 of 27 passing for 367 yards and three touchdowns.
