samuel-collie_web.jpgSamuel Collie, an 11th-grader at Miami Northwestern High in Liberty City, Miami, was named winner of the first Best Voice? Your Choice! Competition by audience votes Saturday at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.

The competition was part of the Superintendent’s Benefit Concert Series.

Collie, who bested 11 of the District’s most gifted vocalists, sang I Know Where I’ve Been from the musical “Hairspray.”

He won a scholarship valued at $5,000, a recording session at the Hit Factory studios and breakfast with award-winning music producer/composer Rudy Perez.

Northwestern High will get a ­$5,000 award for its arts program, because of his win.

Other concert sponsors include the Arsht Center, Herff Jones, Target, Munilla Family Foundation Inc. and Pearson and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Proceeds from the talent contest will benefit public education programs, according to a release from the school district.
