The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Todd Shepard testified that he was motivated to seek out and kill a white officer. University City Sgt. Michael King was shot to death while in his squad car on Halloween night 2008.

Shepard testified he is mixed race but considers himself black. He described choosing King because he was white and vulnerable in the parked patrol car with the window open.

St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch plans to seek the death sentence if Shepard is convicted of capital murder.
