Enid Pinkney, founding president/CEO of the Historic Hampton House Community Trust, received a proclamation from Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.
Vice Chairwoman Audrey Edmonson ws also present during the Historic Hampton House Awards Program, Sept. 29 at the Church of the Open Door in Miami, celebrating the trust’s work to restore the Hampton House.
In its heyday the Hampton House Motel featured luxurious accommodations where all colors of people congregated to hear the best performers of the day.
It also was important historically: Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali were frequent guests, and the Miami chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality had its meetings there.
Plans call for a museum and archive dedicated to vintage jazz, a studio for talented young musicians, a stage for performances, in addition to first-class restaurant and banquet facilities.
