Miami — A free concert, Bridging Classics of the Past with Classics of the Future, will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 1854 NW 54th St., Miami, sponsored by the Historic Hampton House Community Trust.
Highlighting the concert conducted by Dr. Nelson Hall will be hip-hop violinist Jeffrey Hughes in the performance of Handel’s Messiah, hip-hop arrangements of Spirituals and other works, along with the 2011 Community Mass Choir & Orchestra and Florida Memorial University Voice & Steel Pan Ensemble. Youth groups from the community, schools and churches are encouraged to be a part of the audience.
Working to make this concert an annual Brownsville/Liberty City community event with the help of a newly awarded $5,000 community events matching grant from Miami-Dade County’s Office of Cultural Affairs are Historic Hampton House Community Trust members, Richard Strachan, Dr. Cynthia Clarke, Fr. Dr. Hayden Crawford, Charlayne Thompkins, Dr. Enid Pinkney, Erslyn Anders, Alfreda Brown, Catherine Carter, Rev. James Bell, Carolyn Stanford-Adams, Rosa H. Pratt, Dr. Herman Dorsett, Wayne Anderson, Stanley Johnson Jr. and William E. Clarke III.
Known as “Maestro,” Jeffrey Hughes hails from Denver, Co. but has deep Bahamian roots in Miami. Hughes combines classical violin, soul, funk, rock, jazz and hip-hop to create a unique and original sound, driven by his 22-year study of classical violin. Maestro seeks to expand the versatility of the violin and diversify its audience.
When he was three years old, Maestro began studying classical violin and by the age of ten was regularly soloing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. In high school he was awarded a fellowship to study with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C.
