FORT LAUDERDALE – Broward County’s Old Dillard Museum is kicking off its 2013 season with another lineup of compelling activities and programs including the return of vocalist Alana Da Costa to perform in the Walker Auditorium.
Da Costa studied voice at Fort Lauderdale’s Dillard School of the Performing Arts. Since then the songstress has performed throughout the United States and Europe, and shared the stage with such international icons as Freddie Jackson, Beres Hammond, Annette Brisette, Luciano, Maxi Priest and Marcia Griffiths.
Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door for Da Costa’s concert on Thursday, Jan. 10, 7 p.m., at 1009 N.W. Fourth St. The Old Dillard Museum, an historical landmark and education center operated by the Broward Public School System, commemorates the people, places and events that have inspired the African-American community of Fort Lauderdale for generations. The organization seeks to integrate cultural and educational programs with revitalization of Sistrunk corridor.
The center, located in the City’s Historic District, features activities financed by such supporters as the Old Dillard Foundation, Funding Arts Broward, Bank of America, The Links, Inc., The National Endowment for the Arts and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
Museum activities include guided tours, films, lectures, workshops, classes, conferences, collaborative museum exhibitions, displays and ethnic celebrations. The educational activities are designed to serve schoolchildren, community members and patrons from all backgrounds.
Da Costa’s is the next concert in the Cannonball Jazz Series, which not only celebrates America’s original art form, but pays special tribute to Fort Lauderdale music legend Julian “Cannonball” Adderly, who taught at Dillard High School. Upcoming is the Healing Gourds of Sam X Exhibit Opening Reception, 6 p.m. on Feb. 7.
