TALLAHASSEE (AP) — The Florida House has unanimously passed a kidney transplant bill named for former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning.
The Alonzo Mourning Access to Care Act would give patients greater access to medical insurance coverage.
Mourning is a kidney transplant recipient who lobbied the Legislature to pass the bill (HB 675).
It would let patients under 65 with end-stage renal disease obtain Medigap insurance if they already qualify for Medicare. Medigap would qualify as the second of two coverages needed to get on a waiting list for a kidney.
The House passed the measure Monday. It now goes to the Senate, where a similar bill (SB 1022) is awaiting floor action.
