Ammons told the school's board of trustees that he wouldn't take the money until some point in the future.

The Tallahassee Democrat newspaper reported the panel voted Thursday to award Ammons the lowest possible amount for his annual bonus, 25 percent of his $325,000 annual salary, due to potential budget cuts.

The bonus and Ammons gesture, though, drew criticism from a union leader. United Faculty of Florida chapter president Elizabeth Davenport called it a "hollow thing to do'' because the board appears unwilling to consider a faculty pay raise.
