andre dawson_web.jpgThe Carter Park Kings defeated the Opa-locka Hurricanes, 11-10, in the 9-10-year-old bracket in the third annual Thurston AAA Invitational Baseball Tournament held April 8-10 at the Joseph C. Carter Park in Fort Lauderdale.

The Kendall Rays came back, in this their third year of competition, to claim victory over the Carter Park Kings, 13-6, in the 11-12. 

The teams that competed were Delray Beach (two teams, 9-10  and 11-12), South Kendall Rays (11-12), West Palm Beach Black Sox (11-12), Opa-locka Hurricanes 9-10, Lauderhill Giants ( 9-10), Lauderhill Rockies (11-12) and the Carter Park Kings (9-10 and 11-12).

The tournament also included a special event in which a special guest speaker gave a motivational address to the young players. This time it was former Major League Baseball player and Hall of Famer Andre Dawson who gave the keynote speech for the event. In attendance were local dignitaries including Lauderhill City Commissioner Kenneth Thurston, state Sen. Christopher Smith, state Rep. Jim Waldman and Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Bobby Dubose.

Terry Rynard, acting director of Parks and Recreation, and David Miller, Recreations superintendent represented the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Also in attendance were J. Arenas-Chico as an honored guest and Lisa Mays, principal of Walker Elementary School.
