SUNRISE — The Word Up! Poetry Slam is back. This fourth annual competition for Broward County middle- and high-school students, which places a dual emphasis on positive writing and performance, is returning on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. to the Sunrise Civic Center Grand Ballroom, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd.,
Sunrise, with tickets $10 advance or $15 at the door.

The Word Up! Poetry Slam provides student poets an opportunity to create and perform before an audience their inspirational work. Participants will deliver original three-minute poems that focus on education, charity, empowerment and other uplifting themes.

Only 30 students may register to audition, and just 12 poets will be selected to compete in Word Up! The 12 finalists will participate in a series of free writing and performance workshops.

The event will feature emcee Ray “Knowledge” Dominguez and a performance by his award-winning Write Side Poets — as seen on HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices.

Parents and other members of the public are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to hear and support Broward County middle- and high-school students as they compete in a poetry slam with a positive twist.
