MUNSTER, Ind. (AP) _ Black lawmakers are urging Gov. Mike Pence to veto a bill that would force a northwestern Indiana township to cut the amount of money it designates for relief programs for the poor, saying that racism in general and specific hatred toward the township trustee is at the core of the legislation.
The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/11IUsrs) Democratic state Sens. Earline Rogers and Lonnie Randolph told reporters Monday they have sent a letter to the Republican governor asking him to veto the bill.
Three state representatives from northwestern Indiana and several Indianapolis members of the Black Legislative Caucus also oppose the measure.
Republican state Rep. Hal Slager sponsored the measure. He says the money isn't going toward poor relief but instead funds an excessive administrative staff.
