Celebrity gossip website TMZ.com and People.com are reporting that Sherman Hemsley, the actor who made the character George Jefferson famous in "The Jeffersons," died at his home in El Paso, Texas earlier today.
He was 74.
The George Jefferson character first appeared on the sit-com "All in the Family." "The Jeffersons" was a spin-off from that program.
The Jeffersons aired from 1975 to 1985 where it topped the rankings for years.
