addie-greene_web.jpgWEST PALM BEACH — The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc., West Palm Beach Chapter (NCBW), is implementing the Black Women’s Breast Health Project — “Do What Is Best for Your Breast” —  by conducting a series of five interactive and informative workshops concerning breast health throughout Palm Beach County from Jan. 21 through April of 2012.

Although white women are diagnosed with breast cancer far more frequently than African-American women, observers note that African-American women are more likely to die from the disease.

The greater incidence of death among women of color is attributable to myriad of factors, including but not limited to lack of access to health care, lack of knowledge about breast health, fear of the disease and/or fear of the unknown.

Breast health experts have declared that among African Americans, breast cancer is “a public health crisis.”

In response the West Palm Beach Chapter of NCBW and veteran broadcast journalist Cynthia Nickerson have produced an educational video about breast health specifically targeted to African Americans.

The video features stories from survivors, including former Palm Beach County Commissioner Addie Greene; the signs and symptoms of and risk factors for breast cancer; footage of a mammogram; instructions on self-examination; and a discussion about treatment options.

Medical professionals and health care providers will attend the workshops to provide additional information and answer questions.

The first session will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, 10:30 a.m.-12 noon at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 801 Eighth St. in West Palm Beach.

There is no attendance fee for the workshops. Refreshments, raffle prizes and giveaways will be provided.
