MIAMI (AP) _ The Miami Marlins placed starting pitchers Henderson Alvarez and Mat Latos on the 15-day disabled list, recalled right-hander Andre Rienzo and selected the contract of right-hander Vin Mazzaro from Triple-A New Orleans.
Alvarez is out with right shoulder inflammation and returns to the disabled list after two starts. Alvarez is 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA in four starts this season after going 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA during his All-Star season last year.
“I think after we have this MRI we will know more,” manager Dan Jennings said Saturday before hosting the Baltimore Orioles. “I hope (it is not a chronic issue). He’s a huge, huge part of it as he stepped up last year when Jose (Fernandez) went down and became an All-Star.”
Latos, who is 1-4 with a 6.12 ERA, is dealing with left knee inflammation, the same knee he had surgery on last season while with Cincinnati.
“If you have to give him 15 days to get a healthy, stronger Latos back, then that benefits all of us,” Jennings said.
Rienzo and Mazzaro will be available out of the bullpen for the next few games until the Marlins have two spots open in the rotation on Tuesday and Wednesday at Pittsburgh. The Marlins could consider New Orleans’ standouts Justin Nicolino or Jose Urena in the rotation.
“Certainly there’s a couple guys down there that everybody knows and those guys will be discussed and they’ll be pieces that we talk about,” Jennings said. “We’ve got some pieces here now that are in the big leagues that could step in and do that. So I think it will be an interesting discussion as what’s going to be the best thing for us right now as we get ready to go on this road trip.”
The Marlins have lost eight games during a 10-game homestand.
