Spoken word artists will have the chance to showcase their poetic verbal skills at the Super Sunday Poetry Slam on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the poets with the most entertaining and compelling content and delivery.
Richard Milhomme, who is coordinating the event at the News Lounge, 5580 NE 4th Court in Miami, said the slam is based on two simple concepts; “One, give the artists a space to sharpen their craft, while recognizing the skill sets of their contemporaries; and two, allow the audience to be exposed to this art form at its highest level.”
He said that it’s the only slam competition in South Florida, and “it also has one of the highest payouts. The artists vie for three winning positions – first place-$200.00, second place-$75.00, third place-$25.00,” he said.
“Slams are a great way to improve your craft, but it can get really get intense when you notice the difference between positions can be calculated by fractions.” “I also knew the artists weren’t all getting rich, especially those who really love this craft, so the prize had to be respectable.
