AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ University of Maine students are preparing to unveil devices they’ve designed to help an 8-year-old girl with one hand to play the recorder.

Seven teams UMaine Mechanical Engineering Technology students have been working on the projects for about six months. They will show them off on Wednesday in Bennett Hall.

The teacher of the girl, who was born without her left hand, proposed the idea last year. The girl gets to judge the winning projects, choose the winning device and take it home with her.

The device must allow the girl to use both arms to play nine Baroque notes and she must be able to put the device together and take it apart.
