TRENTON, N.J. (AP) _ Police who ask drivers for proof of auto insurance in New Jersey will have to accept images on a phone, tablet or computer.

Gov. Chris Christie signed into law on Thursday a bill that authorizes drivers to prove they have insurance with an electronic device.

Under previous law, officers could accept only paper proof. The new law specifies that paper is still acceptable.

The legislation also makes clear that the use of electronic devices to show proof of insurance does not amount to consent for police or a judge to access other information.
