To reinforce that student-athletes’ performance in the classroom is as important as their performance on the field, Miami Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is featuring an educational seminar. Presentation topics include adjusting to college life; course subject requirements during the first three semesters; classes accepted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)for eligibility and do’s and don’ts of a college recruiting trip.
Compliance officers from the University of Miami, Florida International University, Barry University, St.Thomas University and Florida Memorial University; as well as athletic trainers from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), will present to student-athletes from every M-DCPS high school and student-athletes from St.Thomas Aquinas High School on Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Dr.Gillian Hotz, director of the Concussion Management Program for the University of Miami Health System, is a guest speaker.
MDCPS’ athletic trainers will present on hydration,nutrition and other services.
The kick-off football game will be held Friday, Aug. 26, at 7:30 p.m., featuring eight time state champion St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High versus four-time defending state champion Booker T.Washington Senior High in the newly renovated Nathaniel “TRAZ”Powell Stadium.
Pro football Hall of Famers Larry Little and Michael Irving, alumni of Booker T. and Aquinas high schools respectively, will be the honorary captains. The stadium is located at 11380 N.W. 27th Ave.in Miami.
