Members of the clergy, elected officials, law enforcement representatives and community leaders attended a ‘State of Emergency’ meeting, hosted Monday by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson and the Rev. Johnny Barber, pastor of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Liberty City. More than 200 residents attended, including family members of the 21 shooting victims in recent days. Fielding questions, above from left, are Assistant State Attorney David Mayor, the Rev. Dr. Walter T. Richardson and Circuit Judge Orlando Prescott. Panelists included Edmonson; J.D. Patterson, Miami-Dade Police chief; Craig McQueen, Miami police major; and community activists Tangela Sears, Rebecca Butterfly Vaughn, Leah Wilcox, the Rev. James Wright and Tawana Akins. South Florida Times Editor Andrea Robinson served as moderator. Organizers said the goal is to develop an action plan and next steps in finding ways to stop the shootings and get violators off the streets, with future rallies continuing efforts to curb the gun violence, particularly among young people.
