Ten students were surprised with oversized checks, hats, university swag and a total of $200,000 to help support their undergraduate studies on June 18 inside of the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale.

Each received the scholarship for their involvement in the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering, also known as SECME (seckmee). The NextEra Energy Scholarship for Black Students in SECME, a merit award of up to $20,000 for college-bound high school seniors who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year, is part of Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and parent company NextEra Energy’s commitment to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and supporting the next generation of leaders, thinkers and innovators.
