TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ The school board hasn’t voted but Tucson Unified School District substitute teachers already know they can’t get rehired next year unless they go through an employment agency.
The Arizona Daily Star reports (http://bit.ly/1FFKOg5) district officials sent over 400 substitutes notices on May 5 that their jobs were to be outsourced to Educational Services Inc. The letters encouraged teachers to apply with the employment agency if they wanted to return to the district after July 1.
Superintendent H.T. Sanchez says board members will discuss the proposal in June and that contracting with ESI is cheaper and easier to monitor for Affordable Care Act compliance.
Techers say they won’t be able to pay into the state retirement system under the outsourcing plan, forcing substitutes to become full-time employees or change districts.
