Ask yourself this question: Lord, is that you speaking?

Have you ever wondered why some people can clearly hear the Lord’s voice while others cannot? Are you one who wants to hear and know the voice of God?

The world community is full of conversations which, to many, are nothing but noise.

The voice of God is speaking everywhere, yet many turn away, refusing to listen or just don’t know if it is God speaking.

In I Samuel 3:1-11, Samuel, as a young child, is confused three times thinking it is his master Eli speaking, when, actually, it is God trying to get his attention. The Lord came and stood by his bedside, calling, as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And, finally, young Samuel spoke up, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Hearing the Lord’s voice is the key to our future and it is our obedience to God’s voice that releases the power from God to fulfill His promises to us in our lives.

This is the reason why God sent all the prophets and Jesus to the earth, in the first place: to help us hear the voice of God. But people still continue to get God’s message wrong.

Mark Virkler, author of Communication with God, says, “There are four keys to consistent powerful life-giving conversations with God.”

• Know the sound of God’s voice. “God’s voice in your heart often sounds like a flowing of spontaneous thoughts.”
• Get in the right position. “Become still so you can sense God’s flow of thoughts and emotions within.”
• Assume the correct posture of prayer. “As you pray, fix the eyes of your heart upon Jesus, seeing in the Spirit the dreams and visions of Almighty God.”
• Keep a daily record. “Journal by writing out your prayers and God’s answers bring great freedom in hearing God’s voice.”

Knowing God’s voice becomes easier when we know the Bible and frequently attend Bible Study with others, because, all we need do then is ask, “Does what the voice said line up with God’s word?”

You cannot take somebody else’s study of the scripture for your checking; you must read the Bible and interpret it and check for yourself.

Getting into the right position means more than just prayer; it also means meditating on His Word. The voice should draw you closer to God and it should lead you to express unconditional love, a love that puts others before yourself.

Sometimes it may cause you to feel like letting go of worldly concerns by creating a sense of dying to yourself so that a new consciousness in Christ can be born in you.

One might ask, “What is the correct posture in prayer?” And, “How do I fix the eyes of my heart on Christ?” God gave us inner vision to see the active movement of His Spirit in angels — and in demons, as well as, in the Holy Spirit.

Through the omnipresence of His living son Jesus Christ, we can stay in contact with God, as Jesus did: “Jesus saw the father doing and heard the father saying.” (John 5:19- 20)

Finally, keeping track of our conversations with God is critical. Virkler says to do this we should do “two way journaling.” That means we should write down both our prayers and God’s answers.

In writing our answers from God, Virkler recommends we simply write in faith everything we hear God saying to us without interruption and then go back later and test what God said to us during the writing by comparing our writings to the Holy Scripture.

There are four benefits to hearing the Lord’s voice. First, when we properly hear the Lord speaking, we bear fruit. Second, when we hear the Lord speaking, His voice opens the right doors of opportunity, the ones God really wants us to enter. Third, when we hear the Lord speaking, His voice enlarges our ministry.

Fourth, when we hear the Lord speaking, His voice releases supernatural power from the Holy Spirit. 

Now, ask yourself, “Lord is this you speaking?”
