On Sunday in West Palm Beach, Mayor Jeri Muoio led a strong welcome of President Obama to her city, even as supporters of GOP nominee Mitt Romney were demonstrating outside the Palm Beach County Convention Center on Okeecheobee Boulevard.
Betty Williams of Boynton Beach was among the estimated 6,000 who braved heat and long lines to see and hear President Obama amid a sea of picture-takers.
Speakers who preceded the president included U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, who said “So goes Florida, so goes the nation,” and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Democratic National Committee chairwoman, who begged the questions, “What do they think is the most important resource in a presidential campaign? Money! And what do we think is the most important resource?”
To which the crowd responded: “People!”
The energetic crowd had kept up chants and singing prior to the president’s appearance, and as a staffer emerged to affix the presidential seal to the podium, broke out into a spontaneous chant of “Four more years!” Outside, however, a man holding a handmade sign demonstrated a different presidential preference.
